This week we have a short interview with the two girls behind Clumsy Company, a Vancouver based ethical loungewear and home goods brand.
1. What made you decide to start this business
We always knew we wanted to start a business together and we were constantly brainstorming ideas that could eventually grow into something bigger. At the beginning of 2019, we were feeling very overwhelmed with the state of the world and wanted to find a way to give back. CLUMSY began as a hand-embroidered T-shirt company which donated 25% of profits to charities and organizations that were tackling some of the world's biggest issues such as climate change, women's rights and freedoms, mental health, etc.
2. Where do you see yourself in 5 years
In 5 years we hope to be designing more clothing beyond sweatsuits. While we will always have our sweatsuits, we would love to branch into other aspects of loungewear such as knits, intimates, swimwear, etc!
3. What is your favourite and least favourite part of the job
Our favourite part is meeting and chatting with our customers and other small businesses we collaborate with. We love giving people something special that they can feel cute and comfortable in. The absolute best part is, of course, seeing our customers wearing our pieces!! We honestly love all parts of owning our own business, wouldn't change it for the world!
4. What is your biggest challenge
The biggest challenge for us is to trust our process and not get caught up comparing ourselves to other businesses. We are slowly learning to trust our intuition and create the products we truly love and want to sell!
5. Advice for someone wanting to start their own business
Just dive in! No one knows what they are doing at the beginning but you slowly learn what you need to do and what works best for you. There are so many resources out there and people that are willing to help. Another helpful tip is learn to outsource the things that you don't personally need to be doing! It will make life so much easier and less stressful (for us that was hiring an accountant lol)!
This brand was started by two cousins Nicole and Billie. They moved here from Victoria where they studied and received business degrees. Ever since starting their brand they have been making everything on their own. The brand clumsy company stands on three pillars; ethics, sustainability and community. For ethics they are focused on everything being made in Canada and that the items are 100% organic cotton. The way they are sustainable is that they are a made to order brand. They do not believe in product waste. All packaging is recyclable or compostable and if items are thrown out they decompose in 1-5 months. The last pillar is community. To Billie and Nicole this means creating a local brand that represents them in Vancouver and Victoria. This year they will also be launching a "collective" which is bringing in other Canadian makers to sell their goods. I own a sweatsuit from them and can vouch that it is amazing quality and super comfy. Cant wait to see what they come up with next.
On Feb 13th & 14th they will be at the neighbourhood pop up in Gastown.
